Plainsawn and Quartersawn Grade Descriptions
Plainsawn GradesPlainsawn Grades
1. Clear Plainsawn
This grade features a clean, mixed grain appearance with minimal character marks. Boards are free of knots, except for the rare pin knot no larger than ½″ in diameter, offering a refined and consistent visual appeal.
2. Select Plainsawn
Select Plainsawn includes a combination of leafy and linear grain patterns. Expect visible knots and natural character features, with knots limited to 1½″ on their minor axis. Occasional small cracks may also be present, enhancing the natural look.
3. Character Plainsawn
Character Plainsawn showcases a diverse mix of grain patterns along with a higher presence of knots, cracks, and other natural features. Expect visible nail holes, filled cracks, and subtle distressing that highlight the story of each board.
4. Distressed Plainsawn
This grade emphasizes both grain variation and heavy natural character. Knots, nail holes, cracks, and deliberate surface indentations combine to create a timeworn, rustic aesthetic.
5. Monster Plainsawn
Defined by its impressive scale, Monster Plainsawn offers exceptionally wide and long livesawn planks. These massive boards combine plainsawn, rift, and quartersawn grain in a single cut, delivering striking visual interest and structural integrity.
6. Aged Plainsawn
Aged Plainsawn is produced through our proprietary patented process, giving new wood the rich, mellow tones and surface feel of century-old floors. Boards are medium brown in color throughout the wear layer and retain a natural, aged appearance that deepens with time.
7. Old Original Plainsawn
Old Original Plainsawn preserves the original surface texture and coloration of the reclaimed boards. These planks feature mixed grain patterns, knots, nail holes, minor cracks, and other authentic signs of past use—ideal for heritage-rich designs.
Quartersawn Grades
8. Select Quartersawn
This premium grade consists of at least 75% clear material and 75% or more straight, vertical grain. Knots are limited to a maximum of 1½″ on their minor axis, offering a clean yet character-rich surface with superior stability.
9. Perfection Quartersawn
Our highest quality quartersawn offering, Perfection grade features 100% vertical grain with 98% clear wood. These planks deliver an exceptionally refined and consistent appearance, prized for both beauty and performance.
10. Old Original Quartersawn
Available occasionally by special order, Old Original Quartersawn planks range from 3.0″ to 5.5″ in width. They retain original patina and surface character, delivering a truly historic feel. Please contact us for current availability and grading specifics.
